Encounters calls for entries

December 9, 2021

23 June – 3rd July 2022: Cape Town & Johannesburg, and Online

The organisers of Encounters, Africa’s home of documentaries, are calling for feature, mid-length, and short documentary film entries for the 2022 edition of the Festival. Encounters is returning to celebrate the best of independent filmmaking for the 24th anniversary edition with a multi-platform event from Thursday 23rd June to Sunday 3rd July.

The Festival discovers and showcases the best documentaries from talented filmmakers spanning South Africa, the broader African region, and the rest of the world. The line-up of award-winners and nominees, hidden gems and the most talked about documentaries of the year will engage, entertain, and inspire South African audiences.

The Festival programmers are looking for films that tackle current issues from unique perspectives, take audiences on a journey of discovery and innovate the genre form. They honor films that embody universal themes, and welcome films across a wide spectrum of categories; human rights, current affairs, arts and culture, biographies, science, health, personal and many more. Encounters offers filmmakers various jury and audience awards, extensive media coverage and the opportunity to participate in our Encounters Talks Programme.

SA/African Entries (SA/African film submissions are exempt from paying a submission fee.) Please note that they will be pleased to consider works in progress / rough cuts if your film will be ready in time for the Festival itself (23 June – 3 July 2022). The deadline for submissions is Friday 11th March 2022 (11.59pm SAST)
